Pegasus Airlines Flight Delay & Cancellation Compensation

Pegasus Airlines is Turkey's largest low-cost carrier, operating from its main hub at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). The airline is not a member of any major alliance but has interline agreements with several carriers. Pegasus serves over 120 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa, carrying approximately 30 million passengers per year. The airline operates a modern all-Airbus fleet dominated by A320neo family aircraft.

EC261 Applies Only to Pegasus Airlines' EU Departures

Pegasus Airlines is a non-EU carrier registered in Turkey. EC261/2004 applies only to Pegasus flights departing from EU/EEA airports - for example, Berlin (BER) to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) or Amsterdam (AMS) to Antalya (AYT). Flights from Turkish airports (Istanbul, Antalya, Ankara) to EU destinations are not covered by EC261. As a high-volume low-cost carrier with many EU routes, this distinction affects a large number of Pegasus passengers. Only the EU departure leg of your journey is protected.

€250 - €400

EC261 compensation is based on flight distance. Most Pegasus routes from EU airports to Turkey fall in the medium-haul band (1,500–3,500 km), qualifying for €400 per passenger. Some shorter routes to western Turkish airports from nearby EU cities may fall under 1,500 km, qualifying for €250.

  • Berlin (BER) → Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): €400
  • Amsterdam (AMS) → Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): €400
  • Paris CDG (CDG) → Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): €400
  • Düsseldorf (DUS) → Antalya (AYT): €400
  • Vienna (VIE) → Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW): €250
  • Istanbul (SAW) → Any EU airport: Not covered

Pegasus Airlines operates extensively to EU destinations, particularly in Western and Southern Europe. If your Pegasus flight departed from an EU or EEA airport and was delayed by more than 3 hours on arrival, cancelled without at least 14 days' notice, or you were denied boarding, you may be entitled to compensation under EC261/2004.

Not every disruption qualifies for compensation. Understanding the most common causes can help you assess whether your delay was within the airline's control.

Common Causes

Why Pegasus Airlines Flights Get Disrupted

  • High aircraft utilisation typical of low-cost carriers - tight turnaround schedules leave little buffer for delays
  • Congestion at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport during peak travel periods and holiday seasons
  • Weather disruptions - thunderstorms in summer and fog or snow at Turkish airports in winter
  • Technical issues on the A320neo fleet requiring unscheduled maintenance between rotations
  • Air traffic control restrictions at busy European airports, particularly during summer peak

How to Claim Compensation from Pegasus Airlines Directly

Pegasus Airlines provides an online contact form and an email address (info@flypgs.com) for customer complaints. As a Turkish low-cost carrier, Pegasus may not have the same level of EC261 awareness as EU-based airlines. Be explicit in your claim: reference EU Regulation 261/2004, state that your flight departed from an EU airport, include your booking reference, PNR, flight number, and the exact delay duration or cancellation details.

DIY Process

Steps to Claim from Pegasus Airlines

  1. 1
Gather your booking confirmation, boarding pass, and any delay or cancellation notifications from Pegasus Airlines
  2. 2
Submit your claim via the Pegasus contact form or email info@flypgs.com, citing EC261/2004 and your EU departure airport
  3. 3
State the compensation amount owed based on your flight distance (€250 or €400 for most EU–Turkey routes)
  4. 4
Allow up to 28 days for a response - send a follow-up email if no reply is received
  5. 5
If Pegasus rejects your claim or offers only a voucher, insist on cash compensation and escalate to the national aviation authority in your EU departure country

Pegasus typically responds within 28 days. Low-cost carriers are sometimes less responsive to EC261 claims than full-service airlines. If Pegasus rejects your claim, offers a voucher instead of cash, or fails to respond, you can escalate to the national enforcement body in the EU country where your flight departed. For flights from Germany, contact the LBA (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt); for flights from the Netherlands, contact the ILT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions about claiming EC261 compensation.

Is my Pegasus flight from Istanbul to Berlin covered by EC261?

No. EC261/2004 only covers flights departing from EU/EEA airports when operated by a non-EU carrier. Since Pegasus is a Turkish carrier and your flight departed from Istanbul (a non-EU airport), EC261 does not apply. Only the return leg from Berlin to Istanbul would be covered under EC261 if disrupted.

Pegasus offered me a voucher. Can I insist on cash?

Yes. Under EC261/2004, you are entitled to monetary compensation paid in cash, by bank transfer, or by cheque. Airlines cannot force you to accept vouchers, travel credits, or any other form of non-cash compensation. If Pegasus offers a voucher, you have the right to decline and request the statutory cash amount. State this clearly in your response to the airline.

Does Pegasus Airlines' low-cost model affect my EC261 rights?

No. EC261/2004 applies equally to all airlines operating from EU airports, regardless of their business model. Whether you flew on a full-service carrier or a low-cost carrier like Pegasus, the same compensation rules apply. The fact that your ticket was inexpensive does not reduce the compensation amount - a €30 Pegasus ticket on a qualifying disrupted route still entitles you to €400 in compensation.
