Etihad Airways - Flight Compensation Guide

Etihad Airways (IATA: EY) is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, headquartered in Abu Dhabi and operating from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). The airline serves over 80 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. Etihad operates a fleet including Airbus A320, Airbus A350, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and Boeing 777 aircraft, carrying approximately 18 million passengers per year.

EC261 Coverage - Etihad Airways (Limited)

Etihad Airways is not an EU-registered carrier. EC 261/2004 only applies to Etihad flights departing from EU or EEA airports - for example, an Etihad flight from Paris CDG, Milan MXP, or Düsseldorf to Abu Dhabi. Flights from Abu Dhabi to any EU destination are not covered by EC261. Flights from UK airports are also not covered (Etihad is not UK-registered, so UK261 does not apply). There is no UAE regulation providing equivalent fixed compensation for flight disruptions.

€600

Virtually all Etihad flights departing from European airports exceed 3,500 km, qualifying for the maximum EC261 compensation of €600 per passenger. This applies to cancellations with less than 14 days' notice, delays of 3+ hours at arrival, and denied boarding on eligible EU-departure flights.

  • Paris CDG to Abu Dhabi AUH (5,275 km): €600 ✓ Covered
  • Milan MXP to Abu Dhabi AUH (4,895 km): €600 ✓ Covered
  • Düsseldorf to Abu Dhabi AUH (5,073 km): €600 ✓ Covered
  • Abu Dhabi AUH to London LHR (5,478 km): NOT covered by EC261
  • Abu Dhabi AUH to Sydney (12,049 km): NOT covered by EC261

Etihad is not a member of any major airline alliance, though it maintains equity stakes and partnerships with several carriers worldwide. The airline has positioned itself as a premium long-haul carrier, known for its first-class and business-class products. As a UAE-registered carrier, Etihad is not an EU airline, and EC261 coverage applies only in limited circumstances.

Not every disruption qualifies for compensation. Understanding the most common causes can help you assess whether your delay was within the airline's control.

Common Causes

Common Etihad Disruption Reasons

  • Technical issues on wide-body aircraft requiring specialist maintenance
  • Extreme heat and sandstorms at Abu Dhabi International Airport
  • Crew scheduling issues on long-haul rotations with tight turnarounds
  • Air traffic control delays in Middle Eastern and European airspace
  • Airport capacity constraints at AUH during peak connecting windows

How to Claim Compensation from Etihad Airways Directly

Etihad handles passenger feedback and complaints through its online feedback form and by email. For EC261 claims, submit through the feedback form and clearly indicate that your flight departed from an EU airport. As with other Gulf carriers, Etihad's customer service may initially provide generic responses to EC261 claims. Be specific and persistent - reference the regulation by name and article number.

DIY Process

Steps to Claim from Etihad Airways

  1. 1
Verify eligibility: your flight must have departed from an EU or EEA airport. Flights from Abu Dhabi and UK airports are not covered by EC261 (Etihad is not a UK-registered carrier).
  2. 2
Gather your booking confirmation, e-ticket, flight number, boarding pass, and disruption evidence.
  3. 3
Submit your claim via the Etihad feedback form or email pv@etihad.ae. Reference EC 261/2004, Article 5 (cancellation) or Article 6 (delay), and Article 7 (compensation). State the amount: €600.
  4. 4
Allow 30 days for Etihad to respond. If they offer Etihad Guest miles or vouchers, decline in writing and insist on monetary compensation.
  5. 5
If Etihad rejects or ignores your claim, file a complaint with the NEB of the EU departure country. For unresolved cases, the small claims court of the departure country has jurisdiction.

Include your booking reference, flight number, departure airport (must be in the EU/EEA), travel date, delay or cancellation details, and the compensation amount (€600 for nearly all eligible Etihad routes). Attach your booking confirmation, boarding pass, and any evidence of the disruption. You can also email pv@etihad.ae directly with your claim.

If Etihad rejects your claim or fails to respond within 30 days, escalate to the national enforcement body of the EU country from which your flight departed. Etihad is not a member of any UK or EU ADR scheme. Court action in the departure country - using the European Small Claims Procedure for cross-border claims under €5,000 - is an option for persistent non-payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions about claiming EC261 compensation.

Can I claim for an Etihad flight from London or Manchester?

No. Etihad Airways is registered in the UAE, not the UK. UK261 only applies to UK-registered carriers. Therefore, Etihad flights departing from UK airports are not covered by UK261 or EC261. Only Etihad flights departing from EU/EEA airports fall under EC261. This is a frequent source of confusion for UK-based passengers.

What if my Etihad flight was cancelled and I was rerouted via a different airline?

If your original Etihad flight departed from an EU airport and was cancelled, you are entitled to EC261 compensation regardless of whether Etihad rerouted you on another carrier. The compensation is for the disruption to your original booking, not the rerouting. If the rerouted flight also arrived more than 3 hours late at your final destination, the full compensation applies.
